What is Myofascial Cupping?

Myofascial cupping is a modern therapeutic technique that uses cups to create suction on the skin, drawing blood to the surface and stimulating the deeper layers of muscle tissue and fascia. This method is particularly effective for releasing tension, improving circulation, and alleviating muscle tightness. Unlike traditional cupping, myofascial cupping targets the fascia (the connective tissue surrounding muscles) to reduce stiffness, enhance flexibility, and support long-term recovery.

This technique can be used in combination with other treatments or on its own for a more targeted approach to muscular pain and discomfort. It is especially beneficial for those who have tight muscles, chronic pain, or restricted movement due to injury, stress, or repetitive activity.

What can Myofascial Cupping help with?

Each myofascial cupping session is carefully tailored to your specific needs, helping to address problem areas, release muscle tension, and support your overall well-being. Whether you're seeking relief from muscle stiffness or aiming to enhance recovery, myofascial cupping is a great choice for targeting deeper layers of tension.

Myofascial cupping can help with a variety of common issues, including:

  • Chronic muscle pain and tightness

  • Back and neck pain

  • Sports injuries and muscle strains

  • Limited range of motion

  • Shoulder, hip, and leg tension

  • Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)

  • Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue

  • Muscle knots and trigger points

  • Stress and anxiety-related muscle tension

  • Improved flexibility and mobility

  • Postural problems

  • Recovery from overuse or overtraining

Who is Myofascial Cupping not suitable for?

While myofascial cupping offers numerous benefits, it may not be suitable for everyone. There are certain contraindications where myofascial cupping should be avoided or approached with caution. If you have any of the following conditions, please let me know prior to booking your appointment, as I may not be able to treat you, or we may need medical approval before starting treatment.

  • Acute inflammation or injury: Recent sprains, strains, or swelling can be aggravated by cupping.

  • Fractures: Cupping should only be done once bones are fully healed.

  • Open wounds or skin infections: Avoid cupping over cuts, sores, or skin conditions.

  • Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis): Cupping may increase the risk of dislodging a clot.

  • Osteoporosis: Fragile bones may be at risk with cupping techniques.

  • Cancer: Cupping can be too intense for some cancer patients without approval from a medical professional.

  • Uncontrolled hypertension: High blood pressure must be well-managed; approval from a GP may be necessary.

  • Heart conditions: Individuals with heart issues should consult a doctor before having cupping therapy.

  • Pregnancy (particularly in the first trimester): Seek advice from your healthcare provider before having cupping during pregnancy.

  • Severe varicose veins: Cupping over veins can worsen varicose veins, so avoid these areas.

  • Recent surgery: Post-surgical recovery periods may not be appropriate for cupping until fully healed. However, lymphatic drainage can be beneficial in these cases—please contact me to discuss the appropriate treatment.

Please contact me directly before booking to discuss if this is the correct treatment for you, if you have ever experienced any of these conditions.  In some cases we can still proceed following guidance /  permission from a medical professional.
